How do I care for my Hoya ‘Sunrise’?
- Growing indoor by the west-facing window shielded by sheer curtain
- Light: Moderately bright or bright filter sunlight or grow light if you desire blush-red light stress on the foliage.
- Temperature: between 25-32C in Summer and 14-20C in winter
- Humidity: Avg around 60%
- Soil: chunky mix of orchid barks, perlite, coco chips, fern fiber, worm castings
- Water: saturate the soil when watering and let it dry.
- Fertilization: orchid slow-release fertiliser and liquid feed every now and then.
- Potting: This plant has enjoyed growing in a clear plastic pot to allow me to see moisture in the soil.
My journey with Hoya ‘Sunrise’
I acquired this hoya as a rooted cutting in Late June 2022. I collected this hoya purely for its unique seal-like foliage.
The cutting was acclimatising to my greenhouse cabinet and was growing well in the cabinet for about 11 months. I moved it into a grow tent around mid-autumn 2023 – just to make more room for new hoyas. It adapted and continues to grow really well and fast in the tent.
I managed to take a few cuttings and share between those times. Until around early September 2023 I noticed a small peduncle forming while I was going to take some cuttings – I had to stop because I wanted it to bloom.
The plant finally bloomed on the 11th of October 2023. So how long did it take for Hoya sigillatis to flower for me? It was about 15 months from cutting to flowering. The flower buds took almost a month to form. I notice that it takes longer for the first blooms to form the buds and flower on most of the hoyas that have bloomed for me.
Hoya sigillatis blooms have yellow-pink/yellow-orange hues on both corona and corolla – slightly lighter yellow on the corona. It appears to have no fragrance from the flowers.
